About the A2 Key Exam

Read this before Lesson 1. Learn about the papers, timing, question types, marking and sample materials. Then every lesson will make more sense.

Speaking

8–10 minutes · you speak with a partner · two examiners in the room · 2 parts · 25% of your final score.

Part 1 · Interview

Tests: Giving personal information clearly with basic accuracy.

  • Give a full short answer, not just one word (add a reason or example).
  • Use present simple confidently for facts about yourself.
  • Ask the examiner to repeat politely if you don't understand — that's normal and fine.

Part 2 · Picture Discussion

Tests: Describing, interacting with a partner, giving simple opinions and preferences.

  • Describe what you can see using simple present continuous ('there is/are', 'people are...').
  • Really listen and respond to your partner — agree, disagree politely, ask their opinion back.
  • Use simple opinion phrases: I think..., I like... because..., What about you?
