The verb 'be' + subject pronouns

Grammar Bank: The verb 'be' + subject pronounsJumps straight to this rule — full explanation, examples & practice
Quick rule

I am / you are / he-she-it is / we-they are. Short forms: I'm, you're, he's, we're.

How it works
  1. 1The verb be is the first verb every A2 Key candidate must control: for names (I'm Anna), nationality (She's Polish), job (We're students), and feelings (He's tired).

  3. 3Negatives add not: I'm not a teacher.
  4. 4Always use the short form in speaking.
Examples
  • I'm Marco. I'm from Italy.

  • Is she a nurse? — Yes, she is. / No, she isn't.

  • We're not from here — we're on holiday.

  • What's your name? My name's Elena.
